CBS sought a youth-oriented soap opera to rival ABC’s successful shows. William J. Bell and Lee Phillip Bell crafted The Young and the Restless in 1972. However, Originally named “The Innocent Years!” The shift in title aimed to mirror the era’s spirit. The Bells named the show’s setting after Genoa City, Wisconsin. Airing from March 26, 1973, the series replaced “Where the Heart Is,” with Bell as head writer until his retirement in 1998. Initially considering New York, production settled in Los Angeles. John Conboy served as the first executive producer, succeeded by others like Edward Scott and David Shaughnessy. In the mid-’80s, the Bells moved to LA, where their children, including Bradley Bell and Lauralee Bell, became involved in soap operas, shaping shows like The Bold and the Beautiful.

Debuting in 1973 at CBS Television City in Hollywood. The Young and the Restless was originally a half-hour show, the first soap opera to prioritize visual production elements over traditional dialogue-centric formats. Innovative lighting, camera angles, and Hollywood-style techniques set it apart, influencing other soaps. As well as, Pressure from CBS and affiliates pushed it to expand to an hour in 1980, causing cast departures and family phase-outs. So, The show’s shift led to various filming locations, including Pittsburgh. Also, It made TV history in 2001 as the first daytime soap in HD. Soap net and later TV Guide Network (now Pop) aired same-day episodes from 2006 onwards, marking Soap net’s final broadcast in 2013. The transition to TVGN occurred on July 1, 2013.
